    Professional Development

Research focuses on open ended questions which may not have solutions. Doing research well requires one to tread on a path different to usual college courses. Try these tips:

      1) When stuck for long, pivot away from the current method because you might be pursuing a roadblock

      2) Focus on the big picture for motivation but have smaller manageable and measurable milestones every week to make consistent progress. For instance, the big picture might be 'early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder' but a smaller goal might be 'run a stability analysis on datasets generated by Guesswhat'

      3) Record, label, summarize and review past literature and findings regularly
      4) Write the paper as you research. Do not treat research and writing as parallel activities to be done one after the other

    Keep it Sharp

What can you keep, but cannot share, and once you share it, you can’t keep it anymore?

** Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

    Here's Something Interesting

It was 2012. A company called Tiny Speck was trying to build a multiplayer game. It wasn't a big hit...

But during development, the engineers built a chat application to communicate with each other. Since it was just meant to be an internal tool, they kept adding features they needed for their work - a chat search feature, file sharing etc.

They shut down the game in 2013. But then they realized their internal chat app had some promise -- they called it Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge

Eight months later, Slack marked a valuation of a billion dollars. Read more about their "happy accident" here and here.
